IES Els Pallaresos

Expansion Project for the Existing Building of IES Els Pallaersos in Tarragona

The project stems from the definition of the quality of interior space in the classrooms, meaning that all of them should have natural ventilation and illumination. The topography along with the operational characteristics (vertical communication cores, connections, etc.) of the existing building and its context are essential to determine the operation and layout of the expansion project. The new extension building is connected to the existing building via a new footbridge, with a landing for the elevator-staircase. The existing elevator will be used to service all floors, and a new staircase is introduced, situated close to the administration area and faculty offices, serving as a separation between the wings and the administrative zone.

On the first floor (P1) and ground floor (PB), a hallway with a large glass window, protected by a generous brise-soleil, creates a waiting area that overlooks the linear courtyard enriched with slender, small-crowned trees, acting as a separation between the existing and new classroom wings. The classrooms on these two floors feature openings directly facing the street (northeast orientation), with windows protected by vertical louvers. Existing pine trees that do not interfere with construction are preserved.

On the semi-basement floor (P-1), the classrooms shift their positions in relation to the corridor and are situated on the southwest facade, directly enjoying the courtyard at an elevation of +130.00, with windows protected by horizontal louvers. Split-level classrooms are ventilated and illuminated through an angled courtyard.
